A wonderful old-style house standing in a corner of Harajuku. The first challenge in designing this building was making it fit onto the oddly shaped narrow piece of land. The colors and materials, like the mint green doors and window frames and the white ceramic tiles, were decided from the start. We achieved consistent coloration by comparing coating samples onsite, to avoid differences due to the materials used, such as the stainless steel. Taking time on the plaster work for the concrete coating on the outer wall resulted in a level of precision with no unevenness visible.

As an architect, the truss structure on the underside of the roof showing the frame is a part I am especially attached to. Since there were quite a lot of components involved, including concrete, the steel frame, and boards, we took more time than normal to finish the sectional detail and other drawings. We took as much care as possible in completing the design, such as putting a hole in the steel rib to allow wiring for the ceiling fan attached to the beam to pass through in order to conceal it.
Looking back on the project
This homely-style toilet now stands alone amid the tall buildings on Meiji Street, near Takeshita Street in Harajuku. I loved looking down on the construction from the pedestrian bridge when going to the site from my construction site office, seeing the toilet grow to completion. The intense focus of the creators on the designs and their approaches to the materials changed my perception of how I engage in my job. I have reaffirmed my commitment to actively focus on works or designs that I want to realize.
