The exterior glass walls turn opaque when locked from the inside. Even before its completion, the toilet has become a hot topic on social media sites, generated significant press coverage and created a huge stir. We were all astonished, too when we looked at the model for the first time. It was nearly completed already when we visited Mr. Ban’s office to greet him. He showed us the mechanism of the toilet turning transparent and opaque with the use of light control film. I clearly remember every one of us there was so excited to learn how it works.

Mr. Ban was very particular about every single detail of the design, so the construction drawing went back and forth with his reviews and our revisions. Through this process, we learned the importance of having exhaustive discussions until reaching a conclusion satisfactory to all parties. In particular, joint parts between the sashes and eaves that fix the glass walls have an effect on the exterior appearance, so the parts were manufactured twice until the final adjustment. We were impressed by his uncompromising attitude toward the works to be released into the world.
Looking back on the project
Light control film was the key in embodying the transparent, yet safe and clean toilet devised by Mr. Ban. So all in-house divisions relevant to the issue, such as construction, purchasing, and facilities sections, came together to have discussions. We studied from a variety of different angles on which manufacturer’s product would be the best and how to build a system to turn the glass walls transparent and opaque. As a result of these efforts, we completed the construction of the Japan’s first public toilet using light control film, which made us reaffirm the company's comprehensive capabilities and passion for manufacturing.
