Open and close the door, operate the Washlet®, flush, and play music. This voice-operated toilet lets you do everything just through vocal commands. It took about two years from the first meeting with the creators to its final completion. The construction location suddenly changed partway through, so we rapidly moved to narrow down alternative sites, survey them, finish the working design, make an application, and provide explanations to local community members, all in a short space of time. Everyone came together as a team so that work could commence on the set date three months later.

The structure is reinforced concrete forming a sphere. The special shape required us to check the concrete molding with a temporary erection. Onsite we built a dome-shaped frame for the inside, placed reinforcing rods on top of that, and then placed the exterior frame on them, pouring concrete into the gap between the two frames. The result when we removed the molding was better than we could have imagined. We worked to improve the quality by recoating multiple times the spherical surface which was difficult to coat, with the cooperation of partners who we constantly rely on, which resulted in a truly beautiful structure.
Looking back on the project
The indirect lighting softly broadens out to create a tranquil space inside, where the ceiling rises four meters high. The way it responds to my vocal commands also makes me warm to it. We were fully present in the development setting. Seeing the creators intensely throwing ideas at one another to design a completely new user experience made us realize that we must incorporate the sense of creation more into architecture. Working on this taught us so many things.
