Around 1960 traffic accidents occurred frequently due to rapid motorization, and the period was referred to as the traffic war.
Thus, to protect children from traffic accidents, Daiwa House Industry Co., Ltd partnered with Kawasaki Steel Corporation (current JFE Steel Corporation) to donate a pedestrian bridge, an overpass for traffic safety in front of the central post office by the west exit of Osaka Station. Measuring 5.5 meters high, 4 meters wide and 47.5 meters long, it was Japan’s first pedestrian bridge to have a welded steel frame with combined steel pipes.
The pedestrian bridge was dismantled along with the redevelopment project for Nishi-Umeda in 1991. A section of the balustrade is on display at the Daiwa House Industry Central Research Laboratory in Nara City.
